Opinion Piece: World Vision (September 2009)

World Vision is an organisation that does work around the world, helping with issues such as global poverty, human trafficking and slavery, climate change, lack of food and nutrition in some areas and many more important issues that need to be dealt with. Every year, World Vision helps 20 million people.

There are many ways in which World Vision provides help. One of the ways that lives can be changed dramatically for the better is through child sponsorship. My family and I currently sponsor a little girl by the name of Belinda, who lives in Ghana. She goes to kindergarten. Through this sponsorship, we are able to provide her with money for essentials such as food, water and payment for her education. Just the thought of what we are doing for her gives me such satisfaction. My favourite thing is when we receive progress letters from her, informing us about what she is up to and where the money is going.

On her last letter, she wrote I love you and it made our whole family smile. Sponsoring a child is a fantastic way to give support to the people who really need it. Although some of the money has to go to operational expenses, 75% of the money you donate goes straight into helping pay for food and goods.

Another great way to raise money and support from people is through the 40 Hour Famine. This gets money to the people from places such as Cambodia and Kenya who are at risk of dying of starvation. I am a big believer in this one, I have recently completed the famine (I gave up food for 40 hours) and am still collecting sponsors. My aim is to raise $240, or even more, because this will help out 30 kids for one whole month! That means I will have improved the lives and helped fill the stomachs of 30 starving children, and knowing that is what gives me such a great feeling about it.

If you are thinking about donating money, World Vision is a wonderful cause to give to. When you do something like this, it gives you such a powerful feeling of happiness that not only do the people you are supporting gain something- you do too!
