Article: iNSIGHT 2010 (June 2010)

For seven weeks, I enrolled myself in the photography class, iNSIGHT. We got there and met new friends and teachers, who were lovely. So we basically worked through techniques, styles and types of photography. We went through the basics like how a camera works. We did fun activities each week and it was something I definitely looked forward to every week.

In the middle of our course, on the fourth week, we chose a destination that would make a great place to take photos. Our photos were to be based on issues around the Nillumbik area. We brainstormed and came up with bullying, drugs, graffiti, environment, depression and more. We took photos based on these issues.

A graffiti wall in Eltham was our first stop. A group of us, about 10 people wandered around, taking photos of pretty much everything. After that, we jumped on the mini bus and moved to the next destination. We visited a property in Strathewen, to take photos that reflected the bushfires. I saw some amazing photos taken.

After our final photos were taken, a Nillumbik photography youth photo book was developed, which featured our photos and a description about them. We graduated, a month later and had our evaluation dinner at Nando’s pizza. We received our certificates, photos book, printed photos and more goodies. It was definitely a night to remember. We all made amazing friends that we will keep in touch with forever and we all shared a great interest in photography.

The iNSIGHT photography program was an amazing experience and really taught me about photography in depth. The class was fun with casual theory work but also includes fun practical work. I would recommend this to everyone who is interested in photography. It is a great deal of fun and the teachers are amazing.

Thanks to Sophie Grange for organising this fabulous experience, which is hopefully happening again sometime, and thank you to Jo, who taught us everything we needed to know about photography. I cannot wait for another program like this and hopefully more people will be interested in doing it too.
