Book Review: The boy in the Striped Pyjamas'(June 2009)

Author: John Boynes

Rating: 3 1/2 Stars

This is a heartfelt novel that I couldn't get out of my mind for days. The boy in the striped pyjama's started slowly (I debated on whether to keep reading or return the book back to the library) but it quickly became exciting and engaging. Almost at the end of the novel I eagerly kept reading, ready for the happily ever after or the delightful ending, but it never came. Not only did I cry but it delivered its killer punch in the last few pages which brought me to tears. This book is quite a quick read, but don't underestimate it.

The plot is simple: The story follows a nine year old child named Bruno whose father is a commandant in the German Army. Set in the time of Adolf Hitler's reign, Bruno does not understand the pain and suffering his country are inflicting on the Jewish people. Unexpectedly Bruno and his mother, father and sister move away from their glorious home to live in an isolated area near a concentration camp. With nothing to do and no one to play with, Bruno becomes bored and wishes to return to the comfort of his previous house in Berlin. One day when Bruno is exploring, he comes across a boy sitting at the edge of the fence (where the camp and the forest near his home join). This boys name is Shmuel and they develop a friendship. But the closer Bruno gets to Shmuel, the more danger he puts himself in. Suddenly he is thrown into danger and worry which he does not understand.

This novel left me in tears after delivering its grand (and unexpected) killer punch in the final pages. It is worth a read and you will not regret it. It took me three days to read (I am a fast reader!) and is quick and easy. But beware: It haunts your mind for days after it ends.
