Book Review: Twilight (June 2009)

Author: Stephenie Meyer

Rating: 4 stars

Many would be in disbelief of this novel ever being a good read, but I beg to differ. The twisted romance between Bella and Edward had me sucked in at the opening line and I have read the whole series numerous times. Now that the major motion picture, released by Summit Entertainment and directed by Catherine Hardwicke, has been released onto DVD, hysterical fans now eagerly await the arrive of the thrilling sequel - New Moon.

Twilight follows the story of 17 year old Isabella Swan who moves from her sunny town of Phoenix, Arizona, to the rainy town of Forks, Washington. She doesn't expect anything much to change (except for the weather). That is until she meets the mysterious Edward Cullen. With his cold, pale skin and glorious looks she is immediately pulled towards him. But he seemed disgusted by her, struggling to stay on his seat, when they are paired as lab partners in biology at Forks High School. She plans to confront him but Edward does not show up at school for days on end. When he finally arrives nearly a week later, she arrives to class as usual but he is no longer appalled by her. Instead he politely introduces himself and the lesson carries on. Confused by his abnormal behavior she devotes herself to finding out more about him. When he tells her 'What if I'm not the superhero, I might be the bad guy' her theory is proved. As his secret unfolds Bella discovers the truth: Edward is a vampire.

Along with his adopted siblings, Edward only consumes animal blood; meaning that he is a vegetarian-vampire. As Bella and Edward's twisted romance grows Edward fears for Bella's safety, protecting her at all costs. Until three nomadic vampires, Laurent, Victoria and James appear and make Bella's life hell. The Cullen's venture out to lead false trails so that Bella is not harmed by those who thirst for her blood. But as their plan backfires Bella is put at risk and Edward may not be there to save her.

I adore this book. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good read and can see past the cheesiness of the film. A great novel so I have given it four stars.
